Our congregation has been committed to supporting projects and programs that benefit the whole community since it’s beginning in 1982. The Outreach team is dedicated to fostering programs that support food and shelter security; health and wellness; education and opportunity; and diversity and inclusion in Hancock County. Some of our efforts have gone towards volunteering with or contributing to other organizations that target these specific needs and some we have created to fill the greatest needs we see on our island. What We’re working on Now:
Volunteers work regularly with the Island Pantry, Island Nursing Home, Healthy Island Project, Community Compass, Simmering Pot, Window Dressers, Friends in Action, Reach Performing Arts Center, tutoring students at DISHS, and several community gardens including our own.
The Outreach Committee also contributes to a diverse group of organizations; local, regional, national, and international. Contributions vary according to need. Some of our regular recipients are:
Island Food Pantry, Island Community Center, Community Compass, Island Medical Center, Island Nursing Home, Island Heating Assistance, Ambulance Core, Islanders Against Domestic Abuse, Emmaus House, HOME, Volunteers for Hancock County Jail, Camp Bishopswood, Alfred’s Christmas Fund, Guatemala Housing Alliance, United Way, Episcopal Relief and Development.
Other Projects:
Window Dressers - St. Brendan’s regularly hosts build events to construct insulated window inserts to help lower heating costs for islanders for free or by donation (2016-2019)
Dinner is Served - Monthly free meals for “dine-in” and delivery to homebound community members
Home Roofing Assistance - Fundraising to help winterize homes to reduce economic and environmental impact (2014)
