Paintings by Susan Mangam

This past winter, the community of Saint Brendan the Navigator was blessed with a gift from Susan Mangam, contemplative nun and friend of Saint Brendan’s and Deer Isle.  Susan gave us five beautiful acrylic paintings of sea and skyscapes. Penobscot Bay is represented, as are the islands of Mull and Iona off Scotland’s west coast where St. Brendan travelled long ago.  Susan has asked that these paintings be given for the benefit of the Deer Isle community, both as a way of raising funds for everyday life and as an aesthetic experience.  All proceeds will supplement the Outreach budget to support community relief, social service, justice, and education. Susan has said this about the paintings:

"Two little islands, about the same size, an ocean apart. Whether I cross the sea to Iona or the bridge to Little Deer, it is a crossing over, leaving the familiar behind. Such is the journey to Little Deer Isle where Ospreys whistle, soul friends gather, the sun sets in glory across Penobscot Bay, the sea makes music and I am taken out of my old self, and into more of who I really am. All it takes is a wild stormy night or a sunrise or sunset over the sea to still the chattering mind and reawaken the sense of wonder. Cintra Pemberton, in “Soulfaring” has written: “The primary focus of a pilgrimage is the interior growth resulting from an exterior journey.”...Sketch sacred places, photograph, bring new life back home where the pilgrimage continues."
