Good Friday Liturgy and Tenebrae
Tenebrae (Latin for 'shadows') liturgy creates the emotional aspects of Christ's Passion through scripture reading, solemn hymns or chants, and the extinguishing of candles. As candles are extinguished one by one throughout the service, darkness deepens. The last candle, symbolizing Christ, remains lite and is removed from the sanctuary thus commemorating Christ's absence, death, tomb, and final resurrection.
The congregation leaves the service in prayer and silence.
